Our School Goes Green

Last year, the pupils of a preparatory school in Gabès decided to do something about pollution. Their town, which is famous for its oasis by the sea, suffers from smoke from factories and from plastic waste on the beach.

First, the pupils who belonged to the environment club cleaned the beach every Saturday morning. They collected more than two hundred kilos of rubbish in three months, so the town council decided to put new rubbish bins along the coast. Then they planted thirty palm trees in the schoolyard, because trees clean the air and give shade.

The club also organised an awareness campaign. “Smoking may cause heart disease, and it pollutes the air that your friends breathe,” explained Hamza, fifteen, during a talk in front of the whole school. The pupils made posters with simple rules: “You should switch off the lights when you leave a room. You must not throw plastic bags into the sea.”

On Earth Day, the club received a prize from the regional education office. “We have learnt that small actions can make a big difference,” said the club’s teacher, Mrs Jlassi. Next year, the pupils plan to start a recycling project for paper and bottles.

After handing in your paper: practise the writing task (it is not part of the mark out of 20).

Writing: an article for the school magazine

writing and self-assessment

Your school wants to start an environment club.

Task: write an article of 8 to 10 lines for the school magazine. Describe one pollution problem in your town, explain its causes and consequences, and say what pupils should and must do to protect the environment.

Steps
  1. I read the task and underline: who I write to, the topic, the length, the type of text.
  2. I list my ideas, then I put them in order: introduction, two or three points, conclusion.
  3. I write my draft with linking words (first, then, because, while, so, finally).
  4. I check with the checklist: grammar of the module, spelling, capital letters, full stops.

Let’s Save Our Beach!

Every summer, thousands of people visit the beach of our town, and every evening the sand is covered with plastic bottles and bags. This rubbish is dangerous because fish and sea turtles eat plastic, which may kill them. It also makes our beach ugly, so fewer tourists come. Pupils can help in many ways. First, we should always take our rubbish home or put it in the bins. Second, we should use cloth bags instead of plastic ones. Third, we can organise a cleaning day once a month with our families. Above all, we must not throw anything into the sea. If everyone does a little, our beach will be clean again!

One good example among many: compare, don’t copy.
